Two High Balls Service

Organization:

Set up three rows of cones from center of the goal.  One goalkeeper in the goal, one goalkeeper/trainer on the end line, one goalkeeper/trainer 10 yards from the end line. The goalkeeper deals with a straight, low or high shot, returns the ball, goes through the cones with agility movements and deals with the high ball/cross. Goalkeeper goes back to the center and does the same, but now through the second row of cones. Goalkeepers switch position after three turns. Work from both sides of the goal. 

Goal:

Improve the ability of the goalkeeper to deal with a high ball or cross and a shot.

Equipment:

Supply of balls, cones, one large goal.

Coaching Points:

Catching High Balls:

  • Recognize the flight of the ball.

  • Keep eyes on the ball.

  • Hands start at the hips, move towards the ball and make the last step before the jump large. 

  • When the ball comes from the left, bring up right knee. When the ball comes from the right, bring up the left knee. 

  • Reach out for the ball and catch the ball at the highest point. Stretch out arms.

  • On catch, hands behind and on side of the ball, fingertips on top of the ball. 

  • After the catch keep the ball above the head or bring the ball to the chest and enclose and secure it.

Dealing with Shots:

  • Get into the correct stance at the moment of the shot and react with the proper action.

  • Underhand or overhand catch. 

Communication:

  • Call out 'KEEPER' when going for the cross and high ball.
