TRANSITION #1
TRANSITION #1
2v2 Plus One, #5
Set Up:
Nine players are set up on a split field, playing 4v4 with one neutral. During the drill, the two teams play 2v2 in each half of the field, and the players must stay inside of their own half. The neutral attacker is allowed to play in both halves. The attackers maintain possession and look to change the ball over to the other half of the field after five passes. Balls put out of play are re-started by the Feeder, and the neutral attacker switches out every five minutes.
Coaching Points:
1. Use the entire space and force the two defenders to chase the ball.
2. Anticipate changes of possession and make a quick transition.
3. Open up your stance when receiving and be able to see both sides of the field.
Progressions:
1. Change the ball within three passes.
5v3, Transition
Set Up:
The teams play 5v3 in the end zones, looking to switch the ball over to the other side after making five consecutive passes. When the ball is switched, the defenders must follow it over and re-form the 5v3. When the attackers lose the ball, they become the defenders and play re-starts in the opposite end zone.
Coaching Points:
1. Anticipation – If the ball is about to be turned over, start moving before your opponent does.
2. Concentration – Do not ‘switch off’ with a change in possession. Continue playing.
3. Team Defending – The two defenders in the central zone must move as a unit.
Progressions/Regressions:
Progression 1 – Play 5v4 or 5v2 with a one touch limit.
Progression 2 – The attacking team must make ten passes before changing the ball.
Regression 1 – Play 5v2 in each zone.
5v5, Split Field, #1
Set Up:
There are 12 players set up on a split field, playing 5v5. During the game, each team plays 3v2 in the defending half and 2v3 in the attacking half. The ball must be passed into the attacking half before shooting. When the ball is played in, two attackers cross over with the pass, creating a 4v3. When the defenders win the ball, the two attackers must cross back over so play can re-start 3v2. Balls put out of play are re-started by the goalkeepers.
Coaching Points:
1. Use the full width of the field and make the defenders chase.
2. In the back half, open up with the first touch and find the outside back.
3. Use the up and back combination to get across the midfield line.
Progressions:
1. Only one attacker is allowed to cross over.
2. Shots can be taken from the defensive half.
6v6 Plus Two, #1
Set Up:
There are 16 players set up on a half field, playing 6v6 plus two. The teams play 6v6 and use the two neutral attackers playing in the channels set up along the sidelines. Defenders may not enter the channels. The two neutrals get two touches, and they may not shoot on goal. Balls put out of play are re-started by the goalkeeper of the team in possession. Games are played to two goals, and the neutrals rotate out after each game.
Coaching Points:
1. Use the neutral players to relieve pressure and open up the field.
2. Look to change the ball away from a crowded area of the field before it closes down.
3. Open up with the first touch and turn away from the sideline.
Progressions:
1. Goals may only be scored from a cross and finish.
5v5, Quick Games
Set Up:
Teams of five play games to two goals with a five minute time limit. Free play, no stops for coaching. Play is re-started by the GKs. When the game is over, the third team comes onto the field for the next game, and the losing team goes off. In the event of a tie, the coach can decide to let the defending champs stay on or go off, or determine the winner with a crossbar challenge.
Coaching Points:
No stoppages for coaching during play.
